HOW DO I JOIN THE SCHUSSBAUMER SKI CLUB?

Welcome from the Membership Coordinator

Thank you for your interest in the Schussbaumer ski club.  We are a singles club with a maximum of 150 active members, and approximately 100 alumni, out-of-state, and associate members.  We maintain a ratio of 60/40 of either males or females.  We are an active group whose interests include downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, road biking, kayaking, dancing, and partying!

Our "claim to fame" is our 6,000 square foot mountain chalet located at the base of Peak 8 in Breckenridge.  The chalet provides affordable mountain lodging and an opportunity to meet other active singles.

I'm Interested - What's the Next Step?

Attend any of the evening social meetings advertised on our website. Applications are available at all of the social meetings and a brief overview of how to join the club is given.  If you are unable to attend a social meeting and are interested in attending any of the other social events listed on our website, please e-mail me.  An overview of membership dues, responsibilites, and requirements is provided below.

Membership Criteria

You must meet the following criteria to join the Schussbaumer Ski Club:

  1. Be a resident of the state of Colorado's
  2. Be single (we do have a limited amount of memberships for married couples)
  3. Be over 21 years of age.

Membership Dues: See current dues page There are no additional bunk fees for active members.  Once you become a member, you are given a key and can use the chalet anytime you wish throughout the year.  Staying more than 4 consecutive nights does require prior board approval.  Dues are renewable on your anniversary date.  Changes in dues and by-law are voted on at the annual business meeting in April.

Accommodations

The chalet is set up dormitory style and sleeps 72 people.  The men's floor is located on the lower level and the women's floor is located on the top level.  Each floor has 9 rooms with two bunk beds in each room.  Each floor has a large hall restroom with 2 showers and 2 stools.  There are typically 30-40 people at the chalet on a ski weekend.

What to Bring for an Overnight Stay

  • Bedding (either sleeping bag or sheets, pillowcase, and blankets)
  • Towels and toiletries
  • Ear plugs (some of us snore).

Signing in

The first time you arrive, ask for the chalet manager or another board member to sign your application and help you sign into a room.  You will need to pay an overnight guest fee when you sign in.  Some members pay extra to have a reserved bunk.  If you are in a member's reserved bunk and they show up before 9pm Sunday through Friday or before 7:30pm on Saturday you may be asked to move to another bunk.

Kitchen supplies & facilities

Our large commercial style kitchen has everything you need if you want to cook breakfast, lunch or dinner.  We have dishes, silverware, microwaves, coffee pots, pots & pans, and cooking utensils.  We have two refrigerators, a freezer, and cubicles available for storing food.  Staples such as flour, sugar, creamer, coffee, tea, spices are available at the chalet.  All members share refrigerator and cubicle space so please put your name on any food you bring - otherwise it may be mistaken for a community item.  Community items such as those on the refrigerator shelve marked community are considered "up for grabs" - you are welcome to use these items.

Social Events

This web site's Social Activities calendar and our monthly newsletter contains information on upcoming activities for members.  We've sponsored snowshoeing, hut, bike, and alpine skiing trips in Colorado.  We've also sponsored alpine skiing trips to Europe and Canada.  We normally have a Thanksgiving, Christmas, Luau, downhill Chicken Race and other parties throughout the year.  Costs for these optional social events are in addition to membership dues.

Membership Responsibilities

  • Weekend Chores: Keeping the chalet clean is the responsibility of all members since we do not have a cleaning service.  Everyone except guests are expected to sign-up for a chore such as taking out trash, cleaning bathrooms, vacuuming, shoveling snow, mopping floors, or other tasks.  If you do not sign up for a chore the chalet manager will assign one to you.
  • Work Parties: All active members are required to attend two work parties during the summer.  Typically, there is one work party scheduled per month from June-October.  Work parties are used for general maintenance, painting, repairs, spring-cleaning, drywall repairs, wood cutting, and other tasks.  The work parties last a full day and the club provides lunch.  Work parties are a good opportunity to spend time with other members, get some work done, and have some fun!

How do I join?

  • Attend three activities

This is an opportunity for you to meet current members and familiarize yourself with the club.  It is also an opportunity for the board members to get to know you since the board is responsible for voting on all new membership applications.

One of these three activities must be an overnight stay at the Chalet in Breckenridge.  There is a guest fee for staying at the chalet.

You must complete all three actives within a ninety-day period.

  • Fill out a membership form

Forms are available at the social meetings and at the chalet, or download a Membership Application form now.  Have a board member validate your attendance at each activity you attend.  Get to know two active members who can sign your application as sponsors.

  • Submit your application

Attach a check for the one-time application fee.  This fee is in addition to your annual dues fee.  Checks should be made out to "Schussbaumer Ski Club".  Applications can be given to the membership coordinator or mailed to the Membership Coordinator, Schussbaumer Ski Club, P.O. Box 2525, Denver, CO 80201.

  • Membership Approval

A background check is done on your application and your application is reviewed at the monthly board meetings.  You'll be notified as soon as the board has voted on your application.  The approval process may take 1 or 2 months depending on when you apply and when the board meets.  You may be placed on a waiting list if we have 150 active members or do not have the 40/60 gender ratio required by our bylaws.  The waiting list normally clears within a few months and you'll be notified when an opening becomes available.

  • Membership Dues

Dues must be paid within thirty (30) days of confirmation as an active member.  Guest fees will remain in effect until your dues are paid in full.  You will receive your key to the Chalet after you have paid your dues, and you have completed a shutdown tour of the Chalet.

Once you've been notified that you've been accepted as an active member, you'll need to send a check for current Active membership dues amount made out to Schussbaumer Ski Club to the Membership Coordinator, Schussbaumer Ski Club, P.O. Box 2525, Denver, CO 80201.  We do accept credit cards through the PayPal service.  If payment is not received within 30 days of acceptance your application fee is forfeighted and you need to reapply for membership.
